Teacher Salary Survey 2007

Indiana ranked 22nd in the nation for its average teacher salary in 2006-07, according to the American Federation of Teachers’ (AFT) Survey and Analysis of Teacher Salary Trends 2007.

The average teacher salary in Indiana for the 2006-07 school year was $47,832-a 1.2 percent increase from the previous year. Indiana was ranked 28th in the nation for beginning teacher salaries, at $32,076, an increase of 3.4 percent from 2005-06.

In Indiana, the average salary for charter school teachers was $35,573; beginning charter school teachers’ salaries averaged $33,872.

Traditional public school teacher salaries for other states in the Great Lakes Region ranked as follows: Illinois was ranked sixth in the nation, at $58,275; Michigan was ninth, at $55,541; Ohio was 13th, at $53,536; Minnesota was 18th; at $49,719; and Wisconsin was 26th, at $46,707.

California had the highest average teacher salary, at $63,640, while South Dakota reported the lowest, at $35,378.
