Teacher Salary Survey 2007

Illinois ranked Sixth in the nation for its average teacher salary in 2006-07, according to the American Federation of Teachers’ (AFT) Survey and Analysis of Teacher Salary Trends 2007.

The average teacher salary in Illinois for the 2006-07 school year was $58,275-a 2.8 percent increase from the previous year. Illinois was ranked 11th in the nation for beginning teacher salaries, at $38,363, a decrease of 4.4 percent from 2005-06.

Traditional public school teacher salaries for other states in the Great Lakes Region ranked as follows; Michigan was ranked ninth in the nation, at $55,541; Ohio was 13th, at $53,536; Minnesota was 18th; at $49,719; Indiana was 22nd, at $47,832; and Wisconsin was 26th, at $46,707.

California had the highest average teacher salary, at $63,640, while South Dakota reported the lowest, at $35,378.
